Profile

My name is Rene Karlos C. Bernardo, and I am currently studying for a Bachelor of Secondary Education, majoring in Science at the University of Santo Tomas. Since I graduated from Senior High School under the STEM strand, it has been my goal to become a teacher.

Education in the Philippines could be better in the world. We are considered the 2nd to the lowest in terms of academic standing, as shown in the latest PISA 2018. In addition, a lot of the public schools in our country are in poor condition, such as lack of chairs, destroyed blackboards, little access to technology (especially in the rural areas), no access/built laboratories, lack of laboratory equipment and supplies, no access to diverse educational resources, and more. These conditions made it difficult for the children to learn and develop the necessary skills for their future careers.

With a proper education, they can achieve their goals and aspirations. Hence, as a future educator, I wanted to help them. I wanted these kids to be successful in achieving their goals and dreams for their self, family and country. Even if the salary here is low, my passion as a teacher will continue to strive for the betterment of the youth

It is the oldest Catholic university in the Philippines and Asia. It is considered one of the high-ranking universities in the country and recognized as one of the top 1,000 institutions that provide business and health allied programs in the world.

The university's mission is to provide quality education and develop students' skills, personal growth, life-long learning, and deepening their moral and ethical foundation.

In the college of education, the university offers a diverse set of programs such as elementary education, secondary education, early childhood education, special needs education, food technology, nutrition and dietetics, and Library and information. I'm currently completing my bachelor's degree in secondary education, majoring in science.

Universitas Mulawarman

Oldest University in East Kalimantan

The name "Mulawarman" is derived from a king named "Mulavarman Nala Dewa" who ruled one of the earliest Hindu kingdoms in Indonesia.

The university has four campuses around Samarinda, and we stayed on the main campus, "Gunung Kelua campus," since the faculty of education specializing in science is located there.

Compared to UST, UNMUL's majors in science focus on significant disciplines such as biology, physics, and chemistry. This is why the students can master and develop proper skills in a specific field they choose. In addition, 4th year students have shorter internship periods and diverse tasks when assigned to a particular school.

SEA Teacher's Program

Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia

LG_03.png

The program aims for pre-service teachers to travel and teach in Southeast Asia countries to develop new skills and strategies for teaching in a diverse classroom. The student must stay in the hosting country for a month and complete different tasks, specifically observations, assistantship, practicum, and evaluation. The hosting university will provide the necessary assistant and mentor to the pre-service teacher. The process for joining the SEA teacher's program is as follows: 2 interview sets, submission of required documents, and pre-departure orientation.

The program is an excellent opportunity for future pre-service teachers to try. For me, it tests my passion as a teacher and helps me learn to appreciate one's culture through experience. There are some hurdles and challenges that you may experience, but in the end, it will be all worth it!
